Context

Burkina Faso, which relies heavily on imported heavy fuel for electricity production, has chosen to shift towards renewable energy by developing photovoltaic (PV) solar power projects. The Solar Plan outlines the strategy for expanding large-scale solar energy production across the country through four key components:

  • Programming and construction of solar power plants
  • Network Densification
  • Rural Electrification
  • Capacity Building

Activities & Results

After formulating the Solar Plan and defining the national development strategy, our mission focused on the detailed study of four solar power plants: a 42MWc plant near Ouagadougou and three regional solar power plants with capacities of 1 MWc, 2 MWc, and 6 MWc. Our work encompassed:

  • The medium-term framework of the institutional and technical aspects of the Solar Plan, including integration studies, sector analysis, and recommendations
  • Conducted technical, economic, and financial assessments for:
    • A 42 MWp PV power plant
    • A 30/90 kV 2×70 MVA transformer station
    • A 30 km mixed overhead/underground 90 kV HV power line
    • A 10 MW / 10 MWh grid-connected storage system
  • Environmental and Social Impact Study including environmental and social management plans as well as relocation plans
  • Technical, economic and financial feasibility study of construction projects for three power plants in Dori (6MWc), Diapaga (1MWc) and Gaoua (2MWc)
  • Environmental and Social Impact Study
  • Drafting of tender documents and assistance with the awarding of contracts for all four power plants
